Episode 03
Free Minds Book Club: Community Support and Re-entry
Episode Summary
In this episode, we will focus on community support and how critical this is for a successful reentry back into society. One of the organizations in the Washington D.C. greater metro area that provides this type of support, and much more, is the Free Minds Book Club and Writing Workshop. This community-based organization was co-founded by Tara Libert and Kelly Taylor back in 2002. Free Minds focuses specifically on young men, generally 16 or 17 years old, who are sentenced as adults under Title 16.
Episode Notes
Free Minds offers a weekly book club inside the DC jail and keeps in touch with inmates in federal prisons across the country through books, birthday cards, and The Connect newsletter. Incarcerated members are encouraged to write poetry which is later shared in the community and published in the newsletter. Once they come home from prison, Free Minds offers its members a safe place to connect and to prepare for life after prison.
You can support Free Minds Book Club through Amazon Smile or by getting involved in a variety of ways.
